Canada’s first, and largest theme park was built in 1981 just outside of Toronto. Eftleing Park – Kaatsheuvel, Netherlands
Living only 2 hours away from Efteling Park for 4 hours, I am surprised that we have only been once in the dead of winter. Efteling Park is one of the world’s oldest theme parks, opening the first phase of the park in 1935, beating Disneyland in California by at least 20 years.
Part of the charm of Efteling Park is that it is so low-key. Many locals have heard of it, but enough have yet to visit that the overall experience is not lost to large crowds and overpriced meals. If you find yourself in the area, Efteling Park is a must-do with the kids.
Tivoli Gardens – Copenhagen, Denmark
On August 15, 1843, the garden gates were opened for the first time and the guests were awestruck by the elegant and exotic gardens. Among them was the one and only Hans Christian Andersen, who was inspired to write the fairy tale the Nightingale. Tivoli Gardens is an amusement park and pleasure garden in Copenhagen, Denmark. The park opened on 15 August 1843 and is the second-oldest operating amusement park in the world.
Paultons Park – Hampshire, England
Paultons Park has 4 amazing lands to explore with children (and adults) of all ages; Lost Kingdom, Critter Creek, Tornado Springs and Peppa Pig World.

Cee from Itza Family Thing
Alton Towers, U.K.
This is the best theme park in the U.K., for all ages. The main attraction for younger visitors is the CBeebies Land: CBeebies is the TV channel from the BBC for younger children. All the rides in this area are themed on the TV programmes with costumed characters from the shows mingling and providing entertainment throughout the day at a variety of shows. There is even a CBeebies Land Hotel.
For thrill-seekers, the park has some of the top rides in the World. Highlights include:
- ’Wicker Man’ is the UK’s first new wooden coaster built in over 20 years, creating a globally unique experience
- ’The Smiler’ is the World’s first 14-loop rollercoaster. Its twisting track combines the World beating 14 loops with speeds of 85 km/hr
- The iconic ‘Oblivion’ was the world’s first vertical drop rollercoaster. That’s a 180 feet drop, straight down!
- ’Rita’ powers you straight to 100kph in just 2.5 seconds, putting your body through 4.7G in the process
For those looking for a more relaxing experience, there are also beautiful and extensive gardens to explore. There is so much to experience at this theme park from the many rides, an aquarium, and gardens, to even a spa and water park (both for additional cost). For something extra special, a stay at one of the many themed hotels is highly recommended. These give you early access to the park (amongst other things); something to really help with avoiding some of the dreaded queues!
Rachel of Children of Wanderlust
Universal Islands of Adventure – Orlando, Florida
Universal Islands of Adventure is a great park that has something for everyone. It has larger attractions for older thrill seekers, but also small rides and areas for younger children to play. Each section of the park, and in particular the Wizarding World of Harry Potter, is designed with great detail. The lines for attractions are pretty reasonable. If you purchase Universal Express Unlimited, you have front-of-the-line access all day, not just a handful of times like at other parks. Universal has something to appeal to all ages.
